Dressing for Success: Behold the Power of the Power Suit

Last week I attended the Models of Success event at the Dress for Success Houston headquarters with my firm - it was my first and only front row runway seat experience (shocking, I know), but I don't think I'll ever enjoy another fashion show more than this one. The models (all current or prior clients of the organization) spoke of their personal and professional triumphs, which are not your run-of-the-mill on-the-job stories. These women - mothers, veterans, and survivors in every sense of the word - talked about their promotions, career highs and lows, marathons, and family lives and attributed all their accomplishments to Dress for Success and the resources it provides them. The phrase I continued to hear throughout the evening was "it's more than just a suit," which got me thinking about the way a work outfit can open doors, change your outlook, and (on a less monumental note) make or break your mood.

My approach to work-wear is pretty straightforward: I don't like to be cold, I don't like when my feet hurt, and I don't like being caught in a post-work activity looking like a total dweeb (although sometimes I just embrace that look when its too hard to shake off). So dollars to donuts, you'll find me wearing pants (let's be real - nobody got time for a daily shave) and flats. Upon entering the grind of the work force a young maiden quickly learns while it's not necessarily fun to buy office-friendly clothes, the sad reality is she will spend most of her time in them (womp womp). So investing in some pieces that are on trend and that make it easy to transition from work time to free time (lolz wut is that?) will help put some pep in your step during your 9 to 5 (I for one do a little shimmy when I nail the "don't look like a librarian today" challenge).

Oh - and PSA of the week: buy the black pants from Cos (link below). I paid a visit to River Oaks District yesterday (Sunday Funday, amiright?) and finally got to see what all the Cos fuss is about. The brand sits on very top of the H&M brand totem pole and is all about a chic, minimalist aesthetic - think beautiful cuts, solid colors, and work-appropriate silhouettes. I would liken their pieces to what Theory and Vince have to offer, except with a much better price point (most items are around $100). But back to these pantaloons - I've tried all the black pants under the Tuscan sun and these officially rank numero uno. They have a side zipper/button system and are made out of good, thick material that suck you in (supa flattering) while still being stretchy enough to be comfortable (my tip - go up one size) - total game changers.

Don't be late to the Ball-et: Cinderella Style

In honor of the very last two performances of Stanton Welch's Cinderella at the Houston Ballet this weekend, I give you my ode to the fairy tale I grew up with. From the classic Disney movie my mother only permitted me to watch in espaรฑol (Cenicienta anyone? Nope? Al-righty), to my tween days watching Whitney and Brandy spice it up (don't act like you didn't belt out, "Impossible! Things are happening eeee-veryyyy-day!" to yourself just now) - there's something about a childhood story dressed up in tutus that makes the little girl in me do a happy dance.

And while I personally identify with the step-sistas whose talons wouldn't fit into any dainty shoe, I can still appreciate the idea of being a patron of the arts in my own backyard (cross "get sophisticated" off of the weekend to-do list). Little known fact - Houston has America's fourth largest ballet company - so if the aromas of livestock at the Rodeo ain't your thing, go see something that's just as impressive.

What's black and red and yellow all over? My Dream Rodeo Outfit

Partly inspired by Houston Rodeo's plat du jour: a slice of flamin' hot cheetos pizza with some fried oreos on the side (yes its real - do your research here). Stay tuned this weekend, when I'll give ya the scoop on how I made this dream an affordable reality with a little help from my new Ukrainian amiga Kate. Until then, off to Rodeo you go-go - happy trails, kids.

The Ultimate Woman Crush Wednesday

Happy International Women's Day, my fellow female goddesses.

While it may be tempting to drown out the power-to-the-women messages flowing from every possible airwave today (don't I strive to be the walkin', talkin' embodiment of ladylike empowerment like, everyday?), I for one am going to try to pump up the frequency (literally). Use this global celebration as just that: a moment to acknowledge the value our sex brings to this big, bad world. We are the daughters of heroines, sisters of superwomen, stewards of friendship, and carriers of life - and we still go to work on our holiday

I'll leave you with the not-so-subtle reminder that there's a she devil in all of us capable of kicking ass and taking names. And, to quote my go-to (or listen to her, muchas gracias to Austin at SoulCycle this am for bringing this jam into my life): You're a grown woman, you can do whateva ya want.

Like a rhinestone cowgirl: Houston Rodeo

Fellow Houstonians - do you feel the change in the air this morning? Of course you do - the winds blowing in on this crisp 60 degrees Friday morning can only signify one thing - Rodeo is upon us. And what better way to celebrate the reason for the season than with this curated concoction of country-esque cuts (yee-haw).

A little background for those that are unaware of the going-ons in my transplant state: the Friday before the parade that marks the start of the annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is known as Go Texan Day (hoy muchachas), and the entire city is encouraged to don their finest Western wear.  And that they do - the leathers, the furs, the boots and the hair are nothing short of Texas-big. I'm personally looking forward to pregaming with some funnel cake before watching Mutton Bustin' (5 year-olds riding sheep - no I ain't kidding) and Willie Nelson, but until then I'll be dreaming up ways to dress my inner Dolly Parton. Let's Rodeo, Houston!
